Your position and stage of development will determine whether you need to have wisdom tooth extraction or not. You can get a better understanding of what to anticipate from your pre-extraction evaluation from your oral health care professional. Any tooth, including a wisdom tooth that has completely broken through the gum, can be extracted.
However, to remove a wisdom tooth that is implanted in the jaw and under the gums, a gum incision must be made, followed by the removal of the bone above the tooth. In order to reduce the amount of bone that needs to be removed in order to extract the tooth, it is common practice to extract teeth in this circumstance in discrete segments rather than all at once.
Process
A dentist will advise you to get vertical bitewings so that they can understand the situation of your tooth and give you the suggestion to either remove or wait. A local anaesthetic will be used to numb the teeth and surrounding tissue prior to the wisdom teeth being extracted. You and your dentist or oral surgeon can decide on a sedative to help you manage any anxiety if it’s necessary, in addition to the local anaesthetic.
Nitrous oxide, sometimes referred to as “laughing gas,” an oral sedative (such as Valium), or an intravenous sedative are examples of sedative drugs that could be chosen (given by injection into your veins).
Recovery
The severity of the procedure will determine how quickly you recover after wisdom tooth extraction(a simple removal of a fully erupted tooth versus an impacted tooth in the jaw). This is what you can anticipate overall.
In the initial 24 hours
Following tooth extraction, bleeding could continue for several hours. To manage this, cover the empty tooth cavity with a clean, wet piece of gauze and bite down firmly. Apply pressure continuously for around 45 minutes. An efficient substitute is a moistened tea bag. Tea’s tannic acid aids in the reduction of blood clot development (blood clots work similar to the scab on an open wound). If only minor bleeding persists, repeat this procedure; if substantial bleeding persists, consult your dentist or oral surgeon. For 24 hours following tooth extraction, refrain from spitting or rinsing, refrain from “sucking” motions (such as smoking or drinking via a straw), and stay away from hot beverages (such as coffee or soup). These actions can dislodge the clot, which would lead to dry development.
Usually, the area of the face where the tooth was extracted swells. Use an ice pack on that part of your face for 10 minutes at a time, followed by a 20-minute break, to help reduce swelling. Repeat as often as necessary for the first 24 hours.
To treat any current infection in the area of the wisdom teeth that will be removed, antibiotics that may have been prescribed prior to the procedure should be taken as directed until the full course of treatment is finished.
Until all anaesthesia-related numbness has vanished, a liquid diet should be the only type of food allowed. For a few days, eat soft foods. If you are also on narcotic pain medication, stay away from alcohol as well.
For the first 24 hours, brushing your teeth shouldn’t be restricted to the teeth next to the extracted tooth. Restart gently cleaning your teeth on day two. Commercial mouthwashes should not be used since they may aggravate the extraction site.
24 hours later
After the initial 24 hours of ice, facial edema near the tooth extraction site should be treated with heat. Every 20 minutes, take a 20-minute break, and apply a warm, moist towel to the region. Repetition is required. Note that 2 to 3 days following the surgery, the edema typically peaks.
After meals and before going to bed, rinse your mouth with warm salt water (1/2 teaspoon salt in a cup of warm water). Use just the mouthwashes that your dentist recommends.
If stitches were used and weren’t of the automatic dissolving variety, your oral health care practitioner should remove them in about a week.
